In the Lagos Cub Scout Pack 3803's annual campfire meeting on Saturday night, Ben obtained Cub Scouts highest rank, the Arrow of Light. Five years of Cub Scouting ended with Ben's crossing the bridge to join the Boy Scout Troop 803. Ben was proud, his parents were proud, his sisters where proud, his Den Leader was proud, everybody was very proud.

With the council fire blazing and threatening to burn up the flags, flag poles and any other nearby burnable buildings or materials, the whole pack (about 30 boys) enjoyed the jokes, goofy songs, and graduation activities.

The bird flu story has expats here talking, but no one is leaving yet. With no confirmed human cases yet in Nigeria, most of us are taking a wait-and-see attitude. But there is not a lot of joking going on about it.

Chickens are typically bought and sold on the streets of Lagos and public transport is crowded with people taking poultry to and from open air markets. The government reports that poultry may have been dying from the disease in Nigeria for over a month. On Friday, the bird flu was one of the subjects presented by the managing director at a special townhall presentation. While it was an interesting topic, worsening local traffic jams got more attention.

I'll report more when I know it, but as is typical, local papers tend to be long on sensation and short on facts, so CNN and BBC are the most trusted sources. So, you know about as much as I do.
